A prominent Russian academic has rejected claims that palm oil poses harmful health effects. As reported by InfoSAWIT via glavny.tv on Sunday (7/12/2025), Dmitry Nikityuk, Director of the Federal Research Center for Nutrition and Biotechnology and an Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, affirmed that palm oil has undergone extensive scientific evaluation and is deemed safe.

Nikityuk explained that his institution has conducted comprehensive studies on the microbiological properties, chemical composition, and fatty acid profile of palm oil. According to him, the fatty acid structure of palm oil even shows similarities to that of human breast milk.

“Palm oil used in various products, from ice cream to infant formula, has been thoroughly assessed by the Institute of Nutrition. Our scientific findings show no reason to exclude it as a food ingredient,” Nikityuk said.

His statement responds to several initiatives advocating for bans on palm oil, including legislative-level proposals. Nikityuk argued that such concerns are inconsistent with available scientific evidence.

He also emphasized the importance of strict quality controls throughout production and distribution. In this regard, he commended Russia’s consumer protection agency, Rospotrebnadzor, for effectively carrying out its oversight duties.

Meanwhile, separate reporting from infectious disease experts in Russia highlighted updates on HIV, including how the virus can remain asymptomatic for long periods—though this topic is unrelated to the ongoing debate on palm oil.
