Malaysia Supplies Sustainable Palm Oil to India, Expands Downstream Collaboration

2026-02-27

In a joint statement, both leaders encouraged deeper cooperation in oil palm cultivation and agreed to collaborate on developing the palm oil value chain, including downstream industries and higher value-added derivatives.

“Both sides also agreed to undertake structured engagement to resolve market access issues in a timely manner,” the joint statement read.

The two leaders underscored the importance of the Malaysia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (MICECA) and the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) as foundations for strengthening bilateral and regional economic ties.

They welcomed the ongoing review of AITIGA aimed at making the agreement more mutually beneficial, trade-facilitating, and aligned with current global trade practices. Both also acknowledged the significant potential of MICECA in deepening Malaysia–India economic relations and maximizing its utilization.

In terms of investment, Modi highlighted India’s role as a key investment destination for Malaysian companies. Anwar, meanwhile, welcomed the strong presence of Indian manufacturing and technology firms in Malaysia, which have contributed to the creation of high-skilled jobs.

Both leaders agreed that connectivity is a key factor in enhancing economic cooperation. They appreciated the growing air and maritime connectivity between Malaysia and India and committed to further strengthening it.

As reported by Bernama, the agreement reflects both countries’ determination to expand their strategic partnership, particularly in the palm oil sector, amid rising global demands for sustainability and value-added products.
